IX 2024 - Panel: Land Acknowledgment in the Age of Spatial Computing

Spatial computing has seen the emergence of digital spaces, now inhabitable and increasingly embedded into our familiar physical environments. These hybrid experiences of reality radically transform our relationship with territories.

In this novel landscape, an immersive round table held in the Satosphère, SAT’s large dome, brings together Scott Benesiinaabandan, Anishinaabe (Obishikokaang) intermedia artist; Giovanna Borasi, director of the Canadian Centre for Architecture and member of the Living Lands working group that coordinates decolonization initiatives at the CCA; and Catherine D'Amours, artist and professor at École de design UQAM; Bertrand Nepveu, co-founder of Triptyq Capital, founder of VRvana, and lead developer for the Apple Vision Pro headset; They will address key questions: What type of territorial recognition would be appropriate to express this new alliance between humans, the living, and the entirety of nature? How can we conceive, realize, and inhabit these new open, living territories?

Immersive live visuals will compliment the session.

Honorary doctorate : NSCAD University

NSCAD University is pleased to announce that Luc Courchesne and Zainub Verjee will be awarded honorary degrees at the 2022 graduation ceremony this spring.

“We are delighted to recognize the achievements of these two remarkable individuals,” said Dr. Sarah McKinnon, Interim President, NSCAD University. “NSCAD is always ready to recognize extraordinary, long-term contributions to the art world, and to our school’s success and reputation. We’re very proud to honour Luc and Zainub, and we’re thrilled to present them both honorary degrees in front of our 2022 graduating class.”

Luc Courchesne (BDes 1974) has created engaging works from interactive portraits to immersive apparatuses that have been widely exhibited and collected. He has received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix at the ICC Biennale in Tokyo (1997), the Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas (2019) and Canada’s Governor General’s Award in Media Arts (2021).

A graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1974), and of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1984), Courchesne is a retired professor of industrial design at Université de Montréal, and lecturer at McGill University. He has been associated with the Society for Art and Technology and is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.

“I have been at my work for close to five decades now, and that clock started ticking when I entered the Nova Scotia College of Art is Design at the [former] Coburg Street Campus,” said Courchesne. “I am not yet done with the vision and the will to carry it on. The least I can do in accepting this honorary doctorate is to share with you the mission my mentors gave me at that time: our duty, you and me, is to imagine the world we want, and to work together to make it happen.”

Conférence: Where do you live?

Imagine that the work of relating and spatializing data in a set is supported by algorithms capable of structuring and organizing a large number of elements, that these scenographies of elements can be upgraded, rearranged, transformed and evolved in real time before your eyes… Imagine the pleasure of observing what is happening from within. The experience would be like coming to life anew, of migrating in yet uncharted terrains, ad hoc theaters of memory, emergent ontological models, to form new existential narratives. Finally, imagine a cross between the Library of Babel by Jorge Luis Borges and the Mertzbau by Kurt Schwitters. The project Ephemeral ontologies: algorithmic generation of explorable worlds aims to bring out new forms of spatialization and retroactive immersive experiences that inform, inspire and transform the relationship to oneself and to the World.

Performance : Is AI space shaped by my gaze?

A meteorite struck the Earth 400 million years ago and formed the astrobleme of Charlevoix, a fertile inhabited crescent at the heart of which we are invited to ask these essential questions: Who are we? Where are we? Where are we headed? At its heart, a naturally and artificially intelligent space, inspired by the wisdom of Hubert Reeves, takes us on a journey through the physical and virtual territories of being in the world, at all scales of matter, time and space, in the meanders of complex thought, and filled with love for our bio-diverse natures. This performative, immersive and interactive conference is presented by Luc Courchesne and students from McGill University's School of Architecture, with the participation of Paule Ducharme and in collaboration with the Scientific Committee of the Geosphere Observatory in Charlevoix.

Ephemeral Ontologies — Wien Chiaroscuro

Ephemeral Ontologies is a framework for the construction of algorithmically generated explorable worlds. it allows for the creation of assets (dataset) and of algorithms interpreting the metadata to construct explorable architectures in real-time. Wien Chiaroscuro is an immersive VR experience constructed in the Ephemeral Ontologies (EO) authoring framework.

Workshop: Ephemeral Ontologies

What if the design of the spaces we visit or inhabit was the work of algorithms? In computer and information science, the definition in a database of categories, properties and relations between elements forms a model of the world, or an ontology. When displayed in immersive experience apparatuses such as intelligent screens, XR headsets, domes, architectural projections…, ontologies expose explorable architectures of information, terrains inviting us in to explore and socialize.

Ephemeral Ontologies (EO) is a framework for the construction of algorithmically generated explorable worlds. The framework I developed with a team of collaborators allows for the creation of assets (dataset) and of algorithms interpreting the metadata to construct explorable architectures in real-time.

This workshop will experiment with « data » harvesting tools (image and sound capture, 3D capture and modeling, drawing and graphic design…) for the creation of a corpus of assets. This corpus will then be imported into the EO framework for validation of the concepts and further discussion of the potential of algorithms in the construction of inhabitable spaces.

Luc Courchesne - Current projects

« There is no other destiny for the image than the image » wrote Jean Baudrillard in his 1996 text, Écran Total. In direct relation with the exhibition, which establishes a dialogue between his reflections and photographs on screens and the virtual with contributions from artists and designers on the digital scene, the symposium proposes a series of events—round tables, discussions with artists and designers, conferences, workshops—bringing together guests from various geographical and theoretical horizons, both near and far. How can we think, qualify, script, and materialise this means of access to the world that screen over-mediation exacerbates in today’s pandemic context? Situated point of views, critical perspectives, and creative proposals are at the heart of these international encounters in an attempt to collectively reflect on social and cultural practices in the context of their recent, and potentially lasting, reconfigurations.

Prix Paul-Émile-Borduas 2019

Keynote:

The Construction of Reality

A « Reality Race » is picking up speed with the growing user base of the VR platforms, the commitment of tech giants behind XR authoring and delivery workflows and the expansion of the fulldome network. They are accelerated by progress in sensory expansion, deep machine learning, immersive computing, and ubiquitous cloud technologies rapidly transforming the World as we have known it. « Reality » in every sense of the word, is gaining depth, growing in complexity, and expanding the time-space horizons. In this context, what sort of digital humanism can we hope for when identity, relationships, and the world we live in are increasingly mediated by algorithms.

Naked in Paradise (2018)

NAKED IN PARADISE is a VR installation exposing the life and works of artist Luc Courchesne as an archive constructed more or less arbitrarily by the computer. The explorable space of the archive, featuring fully functional versions of his early interactive works such as PORTRAIT ONE (1990), stretches between two polarities: the Future, a dark space where light has not penetrated yet, and the Past , bathing in the lights of our souvenirs and known facts. At the periphery, the explorable space is a featureless white cloud (in the distant past) and dark cloud (in the distant Future stretching beyond what can be imagined. In between, the cosy familiarity of a Present exposing the artist lifetime from birth till today. An important aspect of the space is that it can be organized and reorganized by computer algorithms in real-time on demand. Some of these algorithms have been programmed to create familiar architectures (objects organized along a timeline, by categories, etc), others are generated by the computer itself (random constructions, by keyword, etc) to reveal, from the same assets, different geographies of one’s own times. The title NAKED IN PARADISE expresses the pleasure of fully exposing vast amounts of information and of allowing to embrace the whole as well a to dive and explore any of the discrete elements. In its current form, the VR database is downloadable as a Unity3D build for the current generation of head mounted displays.

Conférence: Networked immersive spaces for creative collaboration

8;30 AM - 5;30 PM
Shanghai Theater Academy

In partnership with different cultural organization in Canada and abroad, Montreal’s Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) has engaged in the development of strategies and immersive networking technologies to expand the spaces in which we create and live. Based on SAT’s applied research in multisensory immersion, intelligent interaction and the creative use of the Internet, a series of solutions have emerged: One aggregates distant physical spaces to form a unified performing space open to new approaches in stage design. Another one invites participants, captured in 3D, in shared virtual space for real-time interaction and collaboration. These applied research projects conducted in in collaborations with partners such as STA help define the spaces for creation and the future of an open global culture able to bring the world together while respecting the diversity and wealth of traditions and perspectives.

Conference: The Conquest of Reality

Conference: How to make your own mid-career retrospective

Panel: A new idea of the public space

Between the public spaces afforded by architects, landscape designers or urban planners, and the immaterial worlds within which we are invited by artists of the virtual, with passages through layers of augmented experiences of the real, the 21st century promeneur looks for markers. The Inventions of Light
Toronto/Montréal/Lille Talks
16h
Ryerson University, Toronto

As we both crave to know where we are and can’t avoid loosing ourself at times, we are getting accustomed to the idea that our alternately hopeful and distressful world is constructed on fragile equilibriums. In their simplest expressions, as in their most complex, the mechanics of clarity and confusion, of success and failure, of life and death are fed from the same sources that inspired the 18th century inventors of the theories of the beautiful and the sublime. Despite an amplification of the perceptual and conceptual horizons with massive data interpretation making the invisible visible, and despite efforts to model complex systems and to build simulations of the future, contemporary cartographies of “reality” remain uncertain and somewhat unpractical. In this process of apparition and disappearance of facts and certainties, the experiential and conceptual shifts between light and darkness remain essential for photosensitive beings such as ourselves. Beyond the circadian cycle, the interplay of what is given to see and of what is hidden from view on the numerous screens composing our contemporary horizon, reveal the grandeur and misery of our condition as beings, conscious of the expressions of life in the universe.

In collaboration with SAT (Society for Arts and Technology) in Montréal, FACT invites you to immerse yourself in a new and interactive virtual environment: The Drawing Space.

Reaching far beyond the walls of FACT’s building, The Drawing Space links Liverpool with SAT, Montreal, allowing participants to engage in shared experiences with other users across time zones and thousands of miles. The universal activity of drawing allows participants to leave traces of their presence within a shifting virtual landscape, each new addition by a user expanding the project’s universe whilst encouraging creativity and a participatory approach reminiscent of social media.

The proliferation and increased mastery of interactive, immersive and networked media is, as McLuhan professed, dressing us in technology. Dressed and immersed we are, socially engaged in a « reality jam » with the physical, the augmented, and the virtual. In the process, we have turned from spectators to users, visitors and now inhabitants of our own arts. Courchesne will present his recent works and an overview of the research at Montréal’s Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) on immersive scenography, intelligent interaction and network experience.

Conference: Embarkment for Cyberspace, TEDx UdeM

The idea of space has grown more complex with information technologies able to "augment" and "virtualize" reality. How does one circulates fluidly between these folds of the real and how can environmental graphic design be of some help? This presentation will offer examples of layered spaces and offer some thoughts on the new wayfinding stategies.

AppStore launch: Pocket Worlds for Apple's iPhone 3GS

There are other Worlds all around you. Step in and get immersed.
PocketWorlds presents collections of spherical photographs that can be viewed as if you were still physically standing where they were recorded. After selecting an image, you have to turn all around and move the iPhone up and down to get the whole view. For its first release, the PocketWorlds viewer includes a collection of twenty images from the Panoscopic Journal by Luc Courchesne (1).

Other collections will be released in the coming months. To submit your own, or to comment on PocketWorlds, please contact pw@courchel.net.
The Pocket World viewer uses the compass on the iPhone 3GS to pan left and right as you turn around, and the accelerometer to move up and down. On the iPhone 3G and 2G, and on the iPod Touch (models without a compass), you can swipe your finger left and right to pan. Pinching will let you zoom in and out.

(1) The Panoscopic Journal, undertaken by Courchesne in 2000, document his whereabouts and explores the concept of place, of the observing subject and the novel nature of the worlds one is now invited to step in and inhabit. The Journal holds several hundred spherical images from which a collection of twenty is offered with the first release of the Pocket Worlds viewer. Works from the Panoscopic Journal have also been exhibited as prints in galleries and museums and are part of pubic and private collections worldwide. Speaker - 5th World Summit on Internet and Multimedia (Shenyang, China)

Cinema as an invention gave us the greatest art form of the 20th century. Now that we have moved into the 21th century, what lies ahead? Immersion and interaction are widely recognized as powerful vectors of a medium for the future. If this is so, the medium of the future is roooted in ideas that surfaced at the end of the 18th century with Robert Barker’s panorama and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s idea of the introspective self. Could it be that video games turning cinema spectators into actors in authored worlds are the latest expression of ideas that are more than 200 years old?
Courchesne will present the work on immersive projection systems and methods developped at the Society for Arts and technology [http://www.sat.qc.ca].

Keynote: You Are Here : ICEC, Paris

The continuing expansion of the visible domain, increasingly including and giving force (and reality) to the creations of our imagination and to formerly inaccessible places and dimensions of our unfolding universe, has produced a radical shift of the shared concepts of time and space. Suddenly, the statement « you are here » has a very different meaning. Thanks to the proliferation and increased mastery of interactive, immersive and socially engaging media, we have passed beyond the simple curiosity for technologies to find ourselves, as McLuhan professed, dressed and immersed in them. Immersed indeed we are, collectively engaged in a « reality jam » with the physical, the artificial, the augmented, and the virtual. In the process, we have turned from spectators to users, visitors and now inhabitants of our own crafts. Questions such as « Who am I? », « Who are you? », « Where are we? », « How are we supposed to behave? », are now being asked with new relevance and urgency. Survival skills such as conversation, posture, attitude, or simply what to wear, are being reformulated on the fly by the natives and immigrants of this new territory that does not always perfectly accommodates the biological features we inherited from evolution.

Solo exhibition: Recent Works, Gallery Pierre-François Ouellette Art Contemporain. Montréal

In the last two years, Courchesne has focused his attention on seashores—the locus, he finds, of perpetually changing boundaries, a kind of continuous negotiation between two states, the dynamic meeting of two emphatically different and mutually transformative substances. Here, Courchesne tells us, one may read a metaphor for interpersonal relationships and the occasion for a fascinating artistic experience that consists in observing a line formed and transformed in a process at once repetitive and random. A second series presents nocturnal scenes pointing back to Courchesne's work in the 1980s on light and darkness and the connections between imagination and lighting. The third series presents the initial results of collaborative work that Courchesne began in 2008 with artist and choreographer Marie Chouinard.
